Introduction

There are several ways to add the desired portion of source footage to timeline. The basic process involves the following steps:

  • Load a clip into the Source Monitor
  • Set a mark in and mark out point
  • Drag the marked portion of the clip to Timeline
  • Edit the desired portion into your Timeline

Alternative to dragging a clip is to use editing buttons i.e. Insert and Overwrite as shown in the below figure.

If these button are not visible on Program Monitor, then

  • Click on the + (plus sign) as shown above to open Button Editor
  • Click on the button and drag it to the desired place in the Program Monitor.

Insert Edit

Insert edit add a new clip at selected position in the timeline to any portion of sequence. It pushes other clips to shift forward in the timeline by the exact duration of the clip that is being added. Insert editing alter the overall duration of sequence in the timeline. It does not affect the duration of any other clips in the timeline.

Insert editing may cause video and audio track to go out off sync. If there are audio and video clips in timeline, inserting just a video clip may knock all the synced clips out of sync for the remaining duration of sequence.

To perform an insert edit

  • Create sequence from the media.
  • Select another clip in Source Monitor or Project Panel
  • Press the Control (Command) key and drag clip to the target location and track in the Timeline
  • Release the pointer to insert the selected clip.
  • Pushing back all subsequent clips on the track, and any other track on which Sync Lock was not disabled

Alternatively to insert clip using Insert button controls

  • Create sequence from the media.
  • Select another clip in Source Monitor and adjust mark in and out points.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow keys to move the playhead to the precise intersection between the two clips. Navigate the playhead to the desired location in the Timeline panel.
  • Click on Insert button in Source Monitor’s Tools panel

Below figure shows an example of insert edit. At the time of inserting clip, pointer changes to insert pointer. Total duration of the timeline increases after the clip insert.

Overwrite Edit

Overwrite edit adds a clip by replacing any frames already in a sequence starting from the edit point and extending for the length of the clip. It works by covering up whatever is in the timeline at the position where you want to place that clip, based on whichever tracks you have selected. Overwrite edit doesn’t push any tracks back, there’s no need to worry about Sync Lock. Overwrite edit does not change the overall duration of sequence, but it can change the duration of any clips in the timeline if they get covered up by the clip being added.

To perform an overwrite edit

  • Create sequence from the media.
  • Select another clip in Source Monitor or Project Panel
  • Drag clip to the target location and track in the Timeline
  • Content of the dragged clip appears in the Program Monitor. Last frame before the inserted file is shown on the left, and the first frame after the inserted file is shown on the right.
  • Release the pointer to insert the selected clip and overwrite existing clip if any

Alternatively to overwrite clip using Overwrite button controls

  • Create sequence from the media.
  • Select another clip in Source Monitor and adjust mark in and out points.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow keys to move the playhead to the precise intersection between the two clips. Navigate the playhead to the desired location in the Timeline panel.
  • Click on Overwrite button in Source Monitor’s Tools panel

Below figure shows an example of overwrite edit. At the time of inserting clip, pointer changes to overwrite pointer. Total duration of the timeline remains same after the clip insert.

Adding video only or audio only track

You can add the video track, the audio tracks, or both types of tracks of a clip to a sequence.

By default both audio and video track are added to the timeline panel, when a clip is dragged from the Project Panel or Source Monitor. To add only one type of track

  • Double-click a clip in a Project panel or Timeline panel to open it in the Source Monitor.
  • Drag from the Drag Video Only icon in the Source Monitor to drag only the video track of the clip.
  • Drag from the Drag Audio Only icon in the Source Monitor to drag only the audio track of the clip.

Alternatively disable a track from the timeline to avoid adding to that track.
