Introduction

Audio Gain and Volume refer to the loudness of the audio. Volume is the output level or the volume in sequence clips or tracks. It is common to have the music playing at normal volume and then reduce the volume when someone is speaking. When the speaking finishes, the volume is returned to normal level.

Using Timeline

To adjust the volume using the Timeline

  • Zoom in the audio track on the Timeline.
  • Hover mouse over the volume band on the Timeline, pointer will change to two black arrows.
  • Drag upward to increase the volume. Drag downward to decrease the volume.
  • Alternatively press key [ or ] to decrease or increase the volume by 1 decibel. To update the level by 3 decibel, hold Shift key also.

By Pasting Attributes

To apply the same effect to multiple clips, do the following:

  • Adjust the volume of a single clip to the desired level by dragging
  • Copy the clip attribute by going to menu Edit > Copy
  • Select other clips to modify volume level, go to menu Edit > Paste Attributes. Choose appropriate attribute and hit OK.

Using Keyframes

Keyframes allow you to manipulate the volume of a clip. To adjust volume using Keyframes

  • Expand the audio track in Timeline panel by double clicking on it.
  • Click the Show Keyframes button, and choose Clip Keyframes or Track Keyframes.
  • Add keyframes by holding Ctrl (Command) and clicking on the track.
  • Adjust the volume by dragging the second keyframe marker up or down. Use either the Selection tool or the Pen tool to move the Volume level rubber band up (increase volume) or down (decrease volume).

Using Effect Controls Panel

To open Effect Controls Panel, go to Window > Effect Controls. To adjust the volume of an audio track using the Effect Controls panel

  • Select the audio track in the Timeline.
  • Click the triangle next to Volume in Effect Controls panel.
  • Enter a value for the Level. A negative value decreases the volume level and a positive value increases the volume level. A value of 0.0 represents the original clip’s volume level without adjustment.
