In the article i will discuss about commonly used workflow in various panel in Premiere Pro.

Workflow in Source Panel

  • Play clip between ‘Mark In’ and ‘Mark Out’ point
    Windows: CTRL + SHIFT + Spacebar
    Mac: Option + K
  • Maximize Source/Program/Project panel
    Press ~ key
  • Move playhead to mark in/out point
    SHIFT + i/o
  • Play clip till mark out point
    CTRL + Spacebar
  • Play clip from Mark In point till Mark Out point
    CTRL + SHIFT + Spacebar
  • Zoom in/out the track
    Press + or – Key
  • Move one frame backward/forward
    Press Left/Right arrow key
  • Working with Playhead
    1. J : Pressing the J key once will track your play backward at regular speed. The speed will increase by the number of times you press the key. Two taps will speed your playhead twice as fast in reverse
    2. K : Its function is to pause the playhead when skimming through the timeline. K does basically the same thing as the space bar.
    3. L: Pressing the L key will track your play forward the same way the J key moves it backward. The speed will increase by the number of times you press the key.

Workflow Program Panel

  • Maximize Source/Program/Project panel
    Press ~ key
  • Create Subclip
    1. Open the clip in Source Monitor
    2. Mark In and Mark out points
    3. Select the clip in the above clip in Program monitor.
    4. Press CTRL + U on windows and Command + U on Mac to create subclip.

Workflow in Timeline Panel

  • Maximize Source/Program/Project panel
    Press ~ key
  • Move edit forward/backward in Timeline monitor
    Press Up/Down arrow key to move backward and forward respectively
  • Track Swapping in Timeline panel
    • Select the Track
    • Press CTRL on Windows and drag over the desired place in the Timeline monitor
    • Release the CTRL to swap the track. All the tracks in the timeline monitor will shift
  • Selected Track swapping in Timeline panel
    • Select the track
    • Press CTRL + ALT on Windows and drag over the desired place in the Timeline monitor
    • Release the CTRL to swap the track and shift only the selected track
  • Delete the Clip and move other clips to fill the gap
    1. Select the track you want to delete
    2. Press ALT + Backsapce on Windows and Opt + Delete on Mac to delete the selected the clip
    3. Other track on the panel will shift to fill the gap created by deleted clips.
  • Trim a clip
    1. Grab the edge of clip
    2. Drag right or left to trim the clip
    3. To perform the above operation using keyboard shortcut, press CTRL (Option on MAC) + Right/Left arrow key on Windows
  • Mark In/Out Point
    • Move the playhead to the desired location and press ‘i’ key to mark Mark In point.
    • Move the playhead to the desired location and press ‘o’ key to mark Mark Out point.
  • Remove Mark In/Out point
    Windows: CTRL + SHIFT + X
    MAC: Option + X
  • Enable Ripple Edit
    Windows : CTRL + Click
    Mac: Command + Click
  • Top and Tail Edit
    1. To delete everything from left till the playhead of the clip, press ‘q’ (Top edit)
    2. To delete everything from the playhead till the right boundary of the clip, press ‘w’ (Tail edit)
  • Add marker in the timeline
    Single ‘m’ key press will add the marker at the playhead. To add the marker and open marker dialogue, press ‘m’ key twice.
  • Moving across marker
    Go to next marker: SHIFT + M
    Go to previous marker: SHIFT + CTRL + M.

    For other marker keyboard shortcut go to Marker menu.
  • Select single track if the clip has both audio and video track
    Press ALT + Click on Windows
  • Adjust Audio Volume by 1 db
    Press [ key to lower the audio volume by 1db and ] key to increase audio volume by 1 db.
  • Mark clip at playhead
    Press x key
  • Open Clip Speed and Duration panel
    CTRL + R
